Fueling History in the Heart of Texas.
Welcome to the Luling Oil Museum!
Preserving the tools, tales, and triumphs of Luling’s legendary oil boom.
Step Into Luling’s Story
We invite you to discover the story that put Luling on the map. At the Luling Oil Museum, we preserve the machines, moments, and memories of our 1920s oil boom, when our small Texas town struck black gold and changed forever. Whether you're a history buff, a curious traveler, or just passing through, we offer an unforgettable look into the people and power that fueled a Texas legend.
The story of Luling’s oil boom is inseparable from the life of Edgar B. Davis.
A businessman who once ran rubber plantations in Sumatra, Davis came to Luling guided by a sense of destiny, he believed he was drawn here by something greater. He spent his fortune drilling for oil and nearly lost everything in the process. Refusing to give up, he even brought in the famous psychic Edgar Cayce for guidance. And then, he struck oil.
The discovery transformed Luling overnight, launching it into one of the largest oil booms in Texas history.
Davis didn’t just take the riches and run. He threw a record-breaking community BBQ, gave away a massive portion of his wealth, funded civic projects, and lived humbly, always believing that if God wanted him to have more, He’d provide it.
He died broke, but rich in spirit and deeply loved by the town he helped build.
The Luling Oil Museum was founded to preserve this remarkable history.
From vintage equipment and oilfield artifacts to stories like Davis’s, and the men who worked alongside him, we honor the people and perseverance that shaped our community. We're here to keep their stories alive, for our neighbors, our children, and visitors from across the world.

One-of-a-Kind Displays
Donovan Oil-Field Boiler (c. 1920s–30s)
Before diesel rigs and rotary drilling, steam powered the oilfields, and this was the engine behind it all. Built in Parkersburg and supplied by Frick-Reid, our riveted Donovan boiler delivered the dry steam that kept early cable-tool rigs pounding away. Tough, efficient, and essential: no boiler, no boom.

Indoor Oil Derrick Exhibit
The heart of the museum...
Our full-scale, two-story replica of a 1920s wooden oil derrick stretches from floor to ceiling and recreates the sights, sounds, and feel of Luling’s oil boom days. With life-sized roughneck figures hard at work, sound effects, and simulated oil spilling from the well, this immersive display brings the past roaring back to life.

Outdoor Oil Derrick Exhibit
Towering over downtown Luling, this full-size steel derrick is a tribute to the structures that defined Texas oil country. Paired with original machinery, including a working steam boiler and historic engines, this outdoor display shows the power and scale behind the boom. It’s a photo-worthy stop and a powerful reminder of the industry that built the town.
